Up early with the hope of reaching a lonely planet recommended organic cafe not far from our Minshuku. This was our third time of trying to get into this place – the opening hours are 8-11.30 in the morning, but it wasn’t open!! For some reason many of the shops and cafe’s say they’ll open at 8am but don’t actually open until 10am, something to get your head around. So we had hoped for an organic breakfast but we settled on an art decor cafe further into town which provided us with fruit, eggs and some good chunky toast.

We checked out shortly afterwards and went to the station to wait for the train. Ivan and Kim turned up and we were set for a good few laughs on our journey. We traveled with them as far as Toyama where we had to rush to get the train to Kanazawa whilst they went in search of a way to get the famous Alpine route. Kanazawa is a fairly large town based on the west coast of Japan above Kyoto, it has a number of historic sites, castles and one of the most beautiful and written about gardens in Japan. We stayed at the very cosy Guesthouse Namaste not far from the station along with several other backpackers from around the world. Our host showed us around the retro designed kitchen, we could cook our own food at last!

Our first night was in a Japanese style room but we were to be moved upstairs to a western style room the following day – a good thing really as it was located right next to the wash areas. So with only a few hours to spare before the sun would set we explored the local market, went to a great little coffee boudoir type of place- the most amount of care taken over making coffee we have ever seen. Then on our way back to Namaste we picked up food stuff for the next few days.

Whilst we’ve been traveling through Japan many of our guesthouses haven’t allowed for the opportunity for us to cook our own food so we were pretty excited about getting things in to cook and also for the prospect of enjoying some long awaited porridge! In the kitchen we heated up some gyoza, enjoyed noodles and our own style broth and a lovely fresh salad. This was enjoyed along with our fellow house mates and we chatted over beers, exchanged creative projects and planned for the next day. Simon from Quebec had won an International short film competition in Tokyo and had won his trip to Japan so we all loved watching his 40 second award winning short film, here is a link…

We started early with a Japanese style breakfast provided by our Minshuku. It was much nicer than we were anticipating having been warned the night before. There was a traditional Hoba-miso from the area which is a miso sauce cooked on a leaf with a few shitake mushrooms and spring onions on it. You leave it to cook over a candle flame and then add it to the sticky rice, this was very pleasant. Accompanying was some cold grilled salmon, cooked squash, green tea and soup. Perhaps not your ideal breakfast start to the day but it was well worth trying and we left feeling pretty satisfied.

The temperature dropped significantly today and was somewhere around the 5 degrees mark, so with a brisk walk up to the famous morning markets we took in some of the local sights and stopped for a few photography opportunities of local trade. We were disappointed though as it all seems very contrived and set up for tourists. It is mostly Japanese tourists who come to the area along with lot’s of school trips. So off load the tour buses and suddenly the town becomes alive, but perhaps not in the way we had hoped. The word “Tacky-ama” comes to mind. It wasn’t all bad though as we did come across a nice cafe where we helped to translate some tour-guide info for a Japanese chap and then went on to Takayama Jinya.

This temple is beautifully restored and did hold our attention for an hour or so along with the school groups and fellow tourist makers. We managed to overlook this though and took in the historic details throughout. Following on from the temple we had the Takayama hilltops in our sights with a castle ruin at the top. It’s a good little hike up hill and along the way there are further shrines and monuments as well as an empty children’s playground which seemed to capture our photographic imaginations. From here we walked up to the top for a short look out across Takayama before heading back down towards the rooftops and a further path lined with temples. Takayama holds so much history that it’s difficult to forget where you are.

Back at our Minshuku we had a chance to relax and take a breather before heading out to meet Kim and Ivan. This time we chose a cosy little Japanese pub with one chef and many bar-top kitsch accessories such as a fridge that is also a TV, dvd player and playstation!! Along with this he provided us with books all about Japanese food, what he could do for us, explained that we would have to buy a beer whilst apologising all the while for his poor english!! The food was fantastic, fortunately we were able to share most of it as there was so much, Helen had the hoba-miso again this time though it was 4 times the size and had loads of mushrooms with it!! Dave had the local beef dish called Hida Beef which was very very good, melt in the mouth good. The chef gave the ladies a Kirin beer postcard and some goodbye bananas with “please come again” and “thank you” written on them. Priceless!

So with one more night left we prepared for the next step of our train journey to Kanazawa. We would meet Kim and Ivan for the same train the next morning at 11am. A good night was had by all.

Sad to leave Inn Fujitomita we set off to catch the 9am bus from up the road. They have a funny system here, you collect your ticket at the second door on the bus and pay the driver when you arrive at your destination. Your ticket is a number and it flashes on an electronic display, each time it passes through a stop the number moves to the next price. The first bus was 1 hour and cost £20 between the two of us, this got us to Gotenba where we hopped onto our second local bus to Mishima another £15 for 50 minutes.

At Mishima we got the shinkanson bullet train to Nagoyo. This is something that Dave has been looking forward to. It goes at a speed of up to 186 mph, since the 1960′s there has never been a fatality, it’s always on time, and the train doors stop at the exact point of entry with gaps in the barriers for you to board the train. As soon as the train stops there are cleaners at each door ready to go on and clean, we’re sure there are many more stats we could bore you with but that will do. So the bullet train took us to Nagayo where we had an hour or so wait so we went outside into the city to find a coffee and get some air. Following this we found our next train to Takayama and we eventually arrived at 5pm. So from 9am until 5pm we traveled on two local buses, the bullet train and the wide view hida train which has big windows to take in the scenery. It was an interesting journey and gave us some time to chill out, play cards and observe the changing landscape.

We were now on the edge of the Japan Alps and got to our Minshuku at 5.30pm. Our room was a third of the size of the one in Fuji, still Japanese style and there were separate hot onsens. The men’s onsen was like a spa steam room and jacuzzi, the women’s onsen was like a bath and 4 showers in a space less than half the size of the mens! Helen was not impressed having already sneaked a peak at the men’s onsen. After a quick settle in we went out in search of a little Mexican place recommended in the Lonely Planet. It was very quiet out and about and little appeared to be open. We did eventually spot the sign for Chapala though and entered a cosy wooden shack where we found our first travel buddies!! Ivan and Kim sat in the corner and we started chatting away.

We spent the evening exchanging our tales of Japan so far and we found out they are on their honeymoon here for 4 weeks. Congratulations to them!! We all sampled the small portions of food at Chapala and arranged to meet for dinner the following night. They were going on a tour to a nearby World heritage site and we decided on exploring the morning markets, the temple and would go for a walk up to a ruin. Hot chocolate back at the room and we were ready for bed.
