The next morning we got up early and arranged for Balcony to get us some bikes for the day, they do a rental at $1.50 a day. We knew we could get them cheaper in town but couldn’t find the man who was recommended to us so opted for the guesthouse ones. To be fair they were two of the best city bikes we’ve yet had on our travels. Our destination was to head north up the river towards the Kampi Rapids and see if we could spot any of the rare Irrawaddy Dolphins along the way. It took around an hour to get to the main viewing point on this part of the Mekong, however if we wanted to sit and watch the dolphins from the land we would have to pay $6 each and if we wanted to get a boat $10 each. We decided we didn’t want to spend this kind of money and opted for a little further up the road where we could stand and watch some of the rare dolphins rise to the surface. They don’t have a lot of space in this pool and there are around 90 dolphins there at the moment so if you hang around long enough they have to come up for air eventually!! Many people opt for the boat tour option but you can only get upto 100 meters from the dolphins, if you’re a keen spotter then we’d say do it.

Moving on from this point we cycled for a further 5 minutes or so and landed at the Kampi Rapids, a local bathing spot. We had been told about this place the day before and thought it would be worth checking out. The local community have built long wooden huts built on stilts, sitting around half a meter above the river level. They appear to be sectioned off so that each family who works there has a strip to rent out for those of us wanting to relax for the afternoon. The locals use it as a popular bathing and meeting place, families gather together, splash around in the rapid-like current, eat food cooked by the hut owners, sit around and drink, sleep in hammocks and so on. It’s more of a place for them to relax and take time out from work. We paid a dollar each to have our own little space in the huts and we both had a hammock to relax and read on. The owner of our plot kept pestering us to buy some food but we decided to wait until around midday to leave and get some grub at a nearby recommended family run restaurant. Before leaving we bathed our feet in the water, read our books and Helen practised some yoga, it was starting to get a little busier as we left at midday. The restaurant is just as you walk out of the rapids area on the left hand side, we didn’t pay much and each had noodles and stir-fried vegetables, an in-offensive meal that is a little bland.

On our way back to Kratie we stopped off at a temple on the mountain…a mountain that is all of 93m high!! They do have some warped ideas as to scale over here, but it is the highest point in the area so we were a little rewarded by views and bizarre hell vs heaven like paintings in the temples. Back in Kratie we organised our transport to Laos for the next day, we booked a minivan for $14 each which would fingers crossed take us all the way to Don Det at the 4000 Islands with a few en-route transport changes.

One night left in Cambodia, we will go away with fond memories of this beautiful country having both had a wonderful and heart warming experience here.

Boxing Day is traditionally a time for eating the left overs from Christmas day, watching some great films and playing games with family and friends. However this year we wanted beach, sand and sea with some lovely sunshine, especially after coming from the north of China! Lamma Island was our choice as it has good reviews a nice walk from one village to the next and has a good reputation for being a million miles away from Hong-Kong’s manic streets. During the morning we sorted out or next tickets for traveling back in China, Shenzhen to Guilin on a 10 hour sleeper bus which would be our first sleeper bus journey!

The boat over to the island takes around 20/25 minutes. If you want to buy a ticket you need change for the entrance barriers, there are change machines if you don’t have enough coins with you. You can walk from Yung Shue Wan to Sok Kwu Wan in around 90 minutes or so and it’s an easy walk along a custom concrete path. There are shops and restaurants in the villages and we found a great little organic shop which even sold flapjacks and wine which was very reasonably priced, even cheaper than on Hong-Kong Island. We found a beach, ate our packed lunch of sardines on Rivita bread and bought an ice cream for dessert. One caveat however, when there is beauty there is quite often some unappealing elements, such as a coal fired power station just across the bay. It’s a pretty big eye sore but you would hope that the waters are safe, people were swimming and everywhere was pretty clean. If you can ignore the beast on the horizon then this is a little gem of a place away from the shops and manic life in the city.

Continuing our walking we headed over the hills and towards the other village. Its a nice little walk with some great views out to sea (when looking away from the power station!) and the sun was slowly turning our skin golden even in December so plenty of suncream is required. Another beach called Lo Shing off the beaten track can be found and we had it all to ourselves pretty much, a nice jetty with a BBQ area was occupied by a family cooking all sorts of fish and meats. We settled onto our towels and Dave dragged, well carried, Helen into the sea against her wishes! Dave got his punishment after slipping on a rock and slicing off some layers of skin on his heal which stung quite a bit, that was the sea fun over with for him!

After some anti-septic wipes and a “little” bit of sympathy from Helen we hobbled off to the village to head back to Hong-Kong Island. Stopping on the way at a restaurant called Shark Fin Seafood Restaurant we had some awesome fresh fish and prawns, the best fresh seafood we’ve enjoyed on the trip so far! We don’t like the name but it was damn good food.

We made our way back to the guest house, bought some essentials for the next part of the trip, toothpaste, earplugs etc and after the first real sun and beach in months we were knackered! We snuggled down in bed and watched a new episode of E4′s MisFits. A great boxing day, one to remember!

Happy Birthday to you….Happy birthday to you….Happy birthday dear Dave….Happy birthday to you!!! Today is my birthday! As you might have guessed. Who would have thought last year that I would be spending my 27th birthday in Japan! So, what to do to on my special day?

We decided to get out of Kanazawa and head to more remote parts of the country. Up early, porridge and toast for breakfast we head out to catch the train, using the Japan Rail Pass to the max. Our destination is north towards the coast, Nanao, Ishikawa to be precise. Tiredness was a slight issue on the train but we fought through and photographed other sleepy passengers. One women was even receiving some Reiki next to us from an elderly woman which also kept us entertained.

I felt the need to be “harbor bound” so we headed to the waters edge. It was a bit windy and there was handily no-one around, so we had a look out to sea and did a little jig of our own to celebrate my birthday. Helen was also in the mood for singing random songs and melodies which was a nice birthday present.

We wandered around at the sea front and then headed inland to the center of Nanao to see if there was some action taking place. There was plenty to photograph in the backstreets which was great fun and we captured some nice images. We were on the look out for some human ingenuity (a brief from a flickr group) and we found some plastic bottles that had been re-purposed into windmills. A few photos and we felt our submission is possibly complete.

Having to wait an hour for the next train up the coast, we headed for some food. Neither Helen or I eat donuts but we thought we would give Mister Donut a go as a special treat. It was an experience. Very light dough and subtle flavors, kind of baked rather than fried. Also it seemed that this was the local hangout for the OAP’s of the town. More exploration, some purchase of snacks for later and then off to the next town, Wakura Onsen.

This place felt a little strange to begin with. In the summer time / heyday this town must have been the equivalent to Skegness in the UK. It felt quite backwards and had an air of a horror film about it (the Wicker Man and a little of The Shining spring to mind). We carried on regardless, past the Karaoke drive through, and towards the sea front. We found a nice little park and also an amazing view out towards the sea from a foot onsen. This was bliss. Soak your feet and legs in some very warm water and look out to sea. Now this most definitely feels like a Birthday to remember.

After lots of photographs and some lunch at a picnic bench in the park we headed onwards to explore more of this tired town. We headed back on the fast train to Kanazawa and went out for some food at an Indonesian restaurant. Very nice. We cleared all the plates with ease. On for a few more drinks and some pudding, no less than grape (they love there grape flavors over in japan) ice-cream sundae. A lovely day was had by all. Thanks to the lovely Helen for singing to me with her dulcet tones and making my day special. Here’s to 28 next year!
